The Berean Fellowship was formed in 1923 following a period of disagreement with the Temperance Hall fellowship, mainly in two areas:
1) Pearce and Davies controversy over “Special Constables” and 2) Their rejection of A D Strickler’s booklet “Out of Darkness and Into Light”
Special Constables

The Birmigham Trouble
The substance of an address delivered to the Clapham Ecclesia, at the Avondale Hall, on 19th November 1931
Between eight and nine years ago, the Clapham ecclesia, after very prolonged and
patient efforts to effect a change in the mind of the Birmingham [Temperance Hall]
ecclesia, felt compelled, in obedience to the commandments of Christ, to withdraw
its fellowship from that ecclesia, and to use its influence to induce other ecclesias
to adopt the same attitude.
At the date of the division (June 1923) the Clapham ecclesia
numbered over five hundred brethren and sisters, of whom about three hundred supported
and proposition for withdrawal, and the minority of about two hundred formed a separate
ecclesia, and remained in fellowship with the Temperance Hall ecclesia.

Atonement - Clean Flesh
The publication “Sin and Sacrifice” by bro William Smallwood, shows the disagreement that had arisen over A D Strickler’s book “Out of Darkness Into Light”. Despite the best efforts of brethren of their day, including the lectures given, and the articles written, bro Smallwood’s generation were unable to convince A D Stricker and his supporters of the Truth concerning this vital subject.
Note that the book by Allen Strickler referred to above demonstrated that his view was that “his writings” brought light, and not the exposition of the Pioneers in such books as Elpis Israel, Christendom Astray and Eureka.
It would seem from writings at the time, that a lot of “column space” was given to
Allen Strickler, especially in The Christadelphian Magazine and that the words of
Truth were suppressed. The following appeared in the Berean Magazine for December
1923:
“J.D.B. (Canada). —We agree with you that a more appropriate title than Out of Darkness into Light would be Out of Light into Darkness. We sympathise with you and your sister ecclesias in Canada in your lament that “while bro. Strickler and his sympathizers are heard and given a loud voice in the Intelligence columns of the Christadelphian, that from you holding rigidly to the Basis, is over and over again rejected.” We thank you for your encouraging words.”
